New podcast pilot

So, did another pilot podcast with Janet from San Diego a few days ago and here it is for your listening pleasure. I wanted to keep this podcast short(er) but that kind of failed.

I'm not really sure if I like these podcasts, I've done one other pilot podcast since the first one a while back and I just can't seem to be making any headway, they just don't seem that entertaining to me. Maybe this won't work out, I just can't seem to compare it to some of the other podcasts I listen too such as this one:

Matt, Yug and Yahtzee talk about recent and upcoming games

Anyway, here it is: Insert Title Here - Pilot Episode

P.S. Sorry about the hum in the background, Janet had her fan on and I just couldn't edit it out that well.

Barney's Mind - Episode 10 Part 2

YouTube - Barney's Mind - Episode 10 Part 2

There we go. Oh, and just so you guys know I'm going on a 5 day vacation starting next Wednesday. I'm going to try to finish episode 11 before I leave but no promises.

Barney's Mind - Episode 10 Part 1

YouTube - Barney's Mind - Episode 10 Part 1

There, ask and ye shall receive! Part 2 should be done either tonight or tomorrow.

Some stuff

So, I've finished part 1 of episode 10, had some hitches in the dialog but I got it all worked out so part 2 should be done very soon. Just wondering though, would you guys like to have part 1 now and part 2 later or would you rather have them both at the same time?

I'm bored now

Well, someone knocked out the power to my office and, as I'm the only one here, and now without any computers (except my laptop on which I am writting), any work (hopefully autosave worked), any lights, or any internet radio, I'm bored. So, I figured I'd rant about this until something happens.

Oh, here we go, I went out side after the second flicker and heard a transformer pop and now there's a bunch of firetrucks and cop cars driving by. Guess someone hit a pole just around the corner.

And now the firetrucks are coming back, guess it wasn't that bad.

YAY! I have power back now I....can....go....back to work....blah.

P.S. I remember when a power outage at school was awesome because if it was out for more then an hour or two we all went home (usually due to cold weather outside and no heaters). But then I went to college and whenever the power went out we all just had to squint harder at our textbooks and notes and hope our laptop battery didn't die so we could keep playing internet poker instead of learning about differential equations. Ahh, good times.

P.P.S. Oh, and I found this randomly on wikipedia. It's from the book "Bored of the Rings" and if you're a Lord of the Rings book fan (you movie people probably wont find it as funny) and you've spent hours following the characters on the not so legible Tolkien maps (thank god for the Atlas of Middle Earth) then you should also have tears of laughter running down your face from this map:

Barney's Mind - Episode 10 Raw Footage

Episode 10 raw footage is out, I figured I haven't put anything out there for dialog suggestions so here you go. I didn't want to cut anything from this one so the time went over 10 minutes, thus I split it into two parts.

Anyway, knock yourselves out:

Alice and Kev

I stumbled upon this earlier today and just read through it and am awestruck and stunned by it.

Alice and Kev is a story about a homeless daughter and her abusive angry father set in the game Sims 3. I must say, this story almost brought me to tears and the originality combined with the fact that it appears that the majority of the events are game driven just astounds me.

Anyway, I could go on and on gushing about this but I'll simply say that you should read it. The story is only about a month old so there's not much to catch up on if you're worried about that. Also, I must say, this story has brought about more emotion in me then about 90% of the movies and books I watch and read, I simply can't wait to see what happens next.

Alice and Kev - The Beginning

Note: while there are some happy spots this is (so far) a very sad story, you have been warned.

Fixed the glitch, it was fraps being stupid and I just had to reinstall. Anyway, Episode 10 proceeding as normal.

Shephard's Mind vs Barney's Mind

YAR! Check out this awesome crossover of me into Shephard's Mind: Shephard's Mind - Episode 12

Heh, you'll have to wait to my finale to see my side of it (it happens later in my series because Opposing Force takes place a while after the events of Blue Shift).

Barney's Mind - Episode 10 stuff

So, Episode 10 is taking a large amount of time due to two things. First off I had to setup fraps and steam and Blue Shift and everything. Oh, and before I forget, since I had to find the command again here is the command to hide the HUD in opposing force and blue shift: drawhud 0

Anyway, so then I skipped to the yard level and then realized that I had no weapons so I cheated to get all the weapons but that gives you ALL the weapons so I then had to empty the ammo out of all of them. BLARG! What a pain that was.

This brings me to the other thing; I did all the filming, started editing and combining things and got to the point where I was going to do dialog as well as post the raw footage but I realized that there was something wrong about the footage. I finally realized that the audio was a little off, it sounded very "tinny" like I was hearing things through a tin can. At that point I had to go to bed for work in the morning but I think either fraps or my sound card is messing things up. I'll do some test recordings and hopefully get this fixed right away but it's looking like episode 10 might not be done until the end of the week.

EDIT: WEEEeeeeeeee COFFfffeeeee!!!

DOUBLE EDIT: Edge loaded concrete footings are evil, I say we just get some level 30 titans and stick them in the ground and tell them to hold up this building.

Ross Scott does interview with Podcast 17

Ross Scott and Craig Mengel (and a ton of others) get interviewed on Podcast 17 (link)

I had an issue with skipping around on the podcast, anyone else have this bug? Anyway, the interview starts around the 50 minute mark.

EDIT: Oh, here you go: direct link to just the interview only: interview

EDIT AGAIN: Well, after listening to it I had quite a few thoughts. First off I was surprised at how similar my thoughts on the design process are when compared to Ross Scott's, especially on how we come up with dialog for the episodes. Second, I'm glad someone mentioned the Freeman's Mind spinoffs (Shephard's Mind and Barney's Mind) and I was surprised to hear the Ross not only hadn't seen them but didn't really want to (whist citing that he doesn't really like watching his own episodes, which I completely understand).

Anyway, cool interview, way too long though. Oh well, it gave me something to listen to at work.

Podcast guest host?

Nevermind, I had a bit here about being a guest host but my old college roomate and I are going to do one. However, I'm still looking for interested people so if you want to audition to be on the podcast message me on YouTube and I'll send you the details.

Anyway, it looks like this is going to become a regular project and will probably be something that I'll do during and after Barney's Mind. I'm hoping after I get the podcast routine down that I'll setup a website for all this.

Ack, delay

Well, my computers been long due for a reformat, lots of stuff going wrong but I've managed to muscle through it for over a year now.

No more, steam finally died to a corrupted file that my computer is now refusing to delete or have anything to do with whilst citing a cyclic redundancy check error. So, yay, I guess I'll be spending this weekend reformatting and such, go me.

Podcast Pilot

Podcast Pilot

Podcast tentatively titled Games, Movies, TV and Stuff and will be a podcast about entertainment events and occasionally some other stuff that we find interesting.

Hosts: Ian 'Pirate' Riley and Dylan 'Trekkie' Riley
Music: On Your Own - By Mossback (used under Creative Commons license)

So, here's the podcast pilot. Note the word 'pilot'. It is rough and designed for us (and you) to figure out what works and what doesn't. So, please comment on what you liked, what you didn't like, and what you think we could do that could make it better.

Here's somethings that I noticed that I'm going to do:
  • I sound too cheerful all the time, I need to have some more emotional variety.
  • Better sound setup, too quiet a recording so I had to up the volume giving it a background hum.
  • Better stuff to talk about, stuff that's more interesting like reviews and such.
  • A little more structure (but I want to keep it all unscripted).
  • Also, a little more point and counter point, me and Dylan agreed on things a little too much.
So, this is Episode 0 and we'll take any feedback we get and hope to produce a premier episode soon for your enjoyment.

P.S. Not that anyone cares but there's a new Freeman's Mind out: FM - Episode 12

So, I'm thinking I might start doing podcasts as well as blogs as well as Barney's Mind. I'm not really sure what I'm going to talk about, probably games, work, news, and other things. I'll do a pilot one tonight with my brother (who's going to be chilling with me at my apartment) and we'll see if you people like it. It's going to be a LOT more structured than the live Q&A.

Oh, and Barney's Mind - Episode 10 (or episode 1010 in binary) will be out soon. My brother hanging with me for a bit and some minor car repairs and the new Harry Potter movie are probably going to get in the way a bit but, not to fear, I should have it out either thursday or friday (with the usual disclaimer of no promises).

Other news, not sure if I posted this here, I got my car back, doesn't need a new tranny yet but it may soon so I'm going to drive it until it dies, could be 2 months or 2 years and I'm obviously hoping for the latter. Also, finishing up a major project at work, cool beans there. Ummmm, not much else to report, things have been quite busy but at the same time quite boring so the only other thing I can think to put here is a little rant to my local supermarket. Damn you people for giving me stale bread that lasted all of 3 days before molding, I know it happens but, grrrr and stuff (dammit, I can't really be mad at them, I used to work for them and I know how retail is).

Live Q&A recording.

Here is the recording of the live Q&A. Quite crazy and unstructured but it was fun, enjoy.

AHNSJHCXCASL:KL:KL:K!!!!!![insert strangled noise here]

Okay, that was crazy in a hat but it was fun...yes, I will keep telling myself that. So, I said I'd have the audio up tonight but I was hoping I wouldn't have to edit it. Hah, not a chance, so much mindless noise and chatter and useless stuff that I'm going to edit out. Might take me a bit.

In any case, it was fun and I wouldn't mind doing it again but, for the love of god, we are going to do smaller groups next time, if at all. That was way too chaotic. Oh well, it worked out pretty good and I think you guys may like it.

Q&A! First come, first served.

Post your Skype name (listed at the top of the Skype screen) in the comments. I will invite people to the Skype conference in the order listed here. The Q&A is 8 PM EDT tomorrow (EDT is GMT minus 4 hours). Note, if you are not on at 8 PM EDT tomorrow then I will skip your name. If it fills up before you get on you will lose your place. We had 34 people said they would come in the polls so in all likelyhood it will be full quite quickly.

Oh, and one thing I will mention, since this is Skype, everyone will be able to talk, this is fine, I want everyone to be able to laugh, chat, joke, whatever. However, if you're being annoying or not letting anyone speak or anything like that then you will be booted from the Q&A. Also, note that with this many people things like breathing into a mic and such will make things VERY loud. Please, if you have a mic famialize yourself with the audio input volume feature. It can be accessed it skype by clicking on the icon of a headset in the lower, righthand corner.

You can download Skype here:

Barney's/Shephard's Mind Q&A

Okay, so it looks like the Q&A will be Monday, the 13th, 2009 at 8 PM EDT.

KrimsinYT should be there as will I. We will be doing this over the Skype service, you can download the client here:

Skype just came out with a new client, not sure what they changed but to make sure there are no conflicts I suggest we all download the new client (version 4.1) if you already have Skype. Once you've downloaded Skype it's an easy install and account creation process and you're all set to talk to people over the net. If you have any questions just ask me and I can help you out.

Now, for the Q&A you will NOT need a mic, so don't worry about that, you can ask questions over the chat feature on skype and we will read them outloud.

To join the Q&A I'm going to setup a conference call. To do this, I will need your Skype name (it's listed at the very top of the Skype window if you forget it). However, as we're doing this first come first served what were going to do is on sunday at 8 PM EDT I'm going to create a post on here and you guys should reply to it with your Skype name. This list will be the order that I contact people for the Q&A and invite them to the Q&A conference call. If for some reason you're not on when the Q&A starts I'll skip you and go to the next person in line. Also, if someone leaves during the Q&A and doesn't say that they will be right back then I will fill their spot with the next person in line.

Now, we should have just the right amount of space in the conference call (24 people) but if that isn't enough then people will have to wait for someone to leave the Q&A or for the recorded audio, which should be out almost imediately after the Q&A.

Anyway, I know this is a little complex, sorry about that. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and we'll all have a good time. Oh, and I'll probably be logging into Skype a little early on Monday to get everything setup and to help anyone having problems joining. However, I highly reccomend that you use Skype at least once before the Q&A to make sure everything works right.

Anyway see you all Monday.

Q&A and contest

Sooooooooo, after lots of thinking I've decided that I'm going to do a new title and put it on all of the new videos from this point on. I just don't like the title, it was done in half an hour over a lunch break at work. However, I figured that rather then me do a new title I thought it would be fun to make a little contest out of it!

There is a great image of the 3 Barney's face on, as you might tell I used the center one for my original logo.

However, I suggest people try things different, you don't just have to do the while background with the black silhouette of Barney's head. Do whatever you think would make a cool logo as long as you leave me space for the title and the episode number. If you don't have Photoshop try, it's a good Photoshop substitute.

Anyway, to submit just upload it to any photo sharing site such a,,, or whatever. Send me the link through a PM on either here (if you want other people to see it) or on YouTube. The winner, chosen by me, will have their logo posted at the start of every episode from now on, as well as any episode I re-do later, and will have their name (real if you desire or username) put into the credits. Contest closes wednesday of next week at 6 PM EDT.

Here is a concise version of the contest:
  1. Make a Barney's Mind Title, doesn't have to look like Freeman's Mind title if you don't want it too. Make whatever you think would be cool.
  2. Include a spot for text (but please don't put any text in there)
  3. Image size: 640x480
  4. Format: Any
  5. How to submit: upload to anywhere on the internet and send me a link by PM or comment
  6. Prize: I'll use it and you get in the credits of BM
  7. Due date: Wednesday the 15th by 6 PM EDT (the time can be fudged a bit)
  8. Other: DO NOT use copyrighted or other peoples material in making the title, it has to be 100% your work (unless you have permission of course).
So, have fun with that, I look forward to the submissions. I will of course make a blog showing the winner and any honerable mentions. Also, if it ends up a tie where I can't decide which to use I'll run the tie-breaker as a public poll on this blog.

Now, the Q&A is all but set for Monday next week at 8 PM EDT (I can make it later or earlier if this works better for people). It will probably go for a half hour to an hour depending on how much fun we're having. It will be done over Skype (which can be downloaded for free) using the conference call feature. I'm going to work out the details of how you guys will join in and what will happen if we have more people then can fit in the conference call (24 people max). Also, of course, I will record it and post it for all to see.

EDIT: Oh, and here's my Skype name if anyone wants to chat it up sometime: tehmightypirate

I'm usually on every night around 6 pm.

Live Q&A stuff

So, if KrimsinYT comes to join us it looks like the Q&A will be either monday or tuesday of next week. If KrimsinYT doesn't come then it will be this friday.

Now, I've figured out how to record sound using skype but the problem is that it only allows 10 people in a conference call. Suck, that's no good. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows of another way I could do VOIP with something other than skype.

I was thinking of running a vent server off of my PC but, assuming we have 50 or so people, I doubt my 7Mbps internet will be able to handle the load with any decent quality.

We could do the skype thing and have once someone asks a question they leave but that doesn't seems fun (though I will of course record and post the Q&A for those who miss it) but I guess it's a good fall back.

Anyway, any ideas?

EDIT: I may have found a solution. Using an internet radio authoring program called SHOUTcast. Basically Krimsin and I would do a skype chat but I would have a dummy account listening in recording the audio as well as streaming it live to the internet. You guys would access it like any other internet radio (through something like windows media player or winamp).

Anyway, so I'm going to look into this more and I'm going to try a test run soon and I could use a few people to help me out to make sure it works and to try to work out any bugs. Oh, and I set up a poll to see how many people are going to actually be there asking questions. For this poll lets assume that it's going to be monday at 8 PM EDT.

EDIT AGAIN: Stupid internet, apparently Skype used to allow only 10 people in a conference call but I just checked and the current version allows up to 24 people. That should be plenty and anyone who gets left out will have to just wait for the recording.

Barney's Mind - Episode 9

YouTube: Barney's Mind - Episode 9

Yay, it's out! I started using an actual audio program for this one so now I can do pitch changes and such and so on. I'm still learning but you might already be able to tell that the audio quality was a little better in this one. Also, using an actual audio program(s) allows me to combine multiple sound tracks into one and to do echo effects and the like so that makes things easier.

Other things, I found this episode to be kind of hard to make funny. There really wasn't many opportunities to make any good jokes. I dunno, it's good though, kind of an action episode.

Anyway, the music is Revival by Orgy.

Minor delay

Well, two things happened today. First, my brother and family were here and invited me out to movie and dinner and then fireworks (which actually happened here despite the rain) so that cut into a lot of the time I had for BM.

I would have been fine though as I was planning on doing BM in the morning but my laptop died on me. It doesn't have any BM stuff on it but I used it a lot for work so I wanted to find out what was wrong so that I can get it fixed before monday.

So, these combined meant I didn't get any work done today. I'm working on it right after this and may have it out by late tonight but no promises.

Other stuff: fireworks were awesome, best ones they've had up here in years. Also, my laptop seems to have a bad power adapter. It's only putting out something like 11V but it should be putting out 19V. I have a backup AC adapter but it's old and only works about 30% of the time. I disassembled the laptop to make sure it was not anything internal but everything checkout fine in there and the solder points on the DC plug were all fine and the battery is working OK (or at least as OK as a 3 year old laptop battery). I think I missed a plug putting it back together cause now it boots to a BIOS error but I'll deal with that after I finish BM.

Anyway, happy 4th of July for the US people out there. For everyone else, happy Saturday. Oh, and as KrimsinYT (I spelled it right this time) pointed out to me, happy belated Canada day for you too.

Barney's Mind - Episode 9 footage out

Sorry it's out so late. To get it out sooner I'm going to start working on the dialog ASAP so submit dialog suggestions quickly.

Anyway, to mark getting 20,000 views on episode 1 I'm going to be doing a live Q&A session so stay tuned for details regarding that, I'm probably going to be doing it some time next weekend but I've setup a poll for the day people think it would be best to do it. I'm going to do it at 8 PM in the evening EST so that should give both sides of the continent plenty of time to ask stuff (sorry Europe but I think you're getting the short end of the stick here).

Anyway, it will probably be over something like skype and will be first come, first served. We'll probably do it for about a half hour or so. I'll record it and post it online for anyone who misses it.
