Singles Awareness Day

Hmmm, I just realized that this is the first valentines day I've been single in about 8 or so years. Wow, weird. Anyway, made this for a contest on the learnnavi.org forum, a Na'vi love poem. If your significant other is an Avatar fan they might get a kick out of this.

Oeyä txe'lan

Oeyä txe'lan nerekx fa txan atan
Pxel oeru ngal tìran

Oeyä tìyawn lu pxel txep
Ulte oeyä eltu lu pxel vrrtep

Mefo tsam serängi
Slä tsakrr ngal 'ampi oeyä meseyriti

Fa fìkem ftxavanga keye’ung
’Ekong ta oeyä txe'lan lu nì’aw toleiung

Translation:

My heart

My heart burns bright
As you walk to me

My love is like a fire
And my mind is like a demon

Unfortunately, they are at war
But when you kiss my lips

With such passionate insanity
Only is my heart allowed to beat

  14. @Anon: Quiet you, I just won $20 from that contest for first place.

Also, this has nothing to do with the movie really, I love the language, pure and simple. The movies great but the language is awesome.

  15. Now do the entire BM series with Na'vi subtitles.

I guarantee you'll be sick of the language by the time you're done.

  16. better yet, redoe all of the barney voiceover in na'vi

  17. If you like language so much, why not learn german or spanish or something? Or REAL native american one, why a fictional one for a movie?

  20. Why not learn another language? Well, because they're boring. Nobody has ever tried to learn Na'vi. It's fun to be a pioneer of something. Plus there's no challenge there. A bunch of the grammar rules for Na'vi are being withheld for copyright reasons so it's a lot of fun to disecect phrases and stuff to try to pull out new grammar rules.

That said though, I've had a lot of fun learning Na'vi and, once I've mastered it, I definitely plan to continue onto more practical languages. Maybe I'll go back to french since I learned a little bit of that in high school.

That's one of the things that's wonderful about this language. I had no idea how much fun it is to truely learn a language and I totally plan on continuing learning languages for the rest of my life.

  21. Na'vi reminds me a lot of Tagalog (Filipino), the language my mom speaks. When we went to see Avatar, I kept wanting to turn to my mom and ask her what they were REALLY saying. That was...interesting. O_O;

Languages are fascinating, though. I've been wanting to minor in linguistics for the longest time...

  22. It's funny, since I've talked to a lot of people about Na'vi all over the world I get so many people saying "it sounds like this language" or "it has similar grammar to this language" and so on (except for english, french, and spanish, it sounds nothing like those). Since I've talked with the guy who invented the language he has said that he designed it on purpose to be like that, people can find many similarities to Earth's languagues but it involves so many obscure parts that it's unlike any of them.

Yeah, I totally am in love with languages now, if I had the time I would also love to get a degree in linguistics.

  23. Yeah, Na'vi doesn't seem to have very deep roots in Germanic or Romance languages. There's a lot of Asian influence I've noticed, however.

Oh, and do you really want to record some sort of group Skype thing with just a bunch of the Mind makers talking? If so, I was thinking we could have people send in questions for us to answer if they wanted to. At least then it would still be a sort of Q&A, but minus the chaos and disorder of a dozen people vying for your attention. "Hey, Ian!" must get old, I'm certain. *laugh*

  24. if you do a skype thing can you post it on youtube please

    ReplyDelete
  25. lol sounds like fun Chy, I think we should try it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We should get EVERYONE to join if we can! (I know time differences are an issue sometimes.)

"Chy"? XD Sounds like "Chai"! That's my favorite tea!

Does this mean I can add you to my Skype contacts? Because if it does, you might catch the Skype illness that's been floating around...enter at your own risk. O_O; I'm rewriting the laws of thermodynamics to accommodate the laws of pathodynamics because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. lol, I'm so calling you chai from now on :P

Of course you can add me to your skype contacts.

  28. "hey ian" (lol) ross scott is sick so it wont be any new fms for awhile =(

on another note how about you and corky do a mini serys using gmod called barney and friends it ether set in bulgaria or on the jurney ther using fsx just a idea =)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I was just saying, when are you ever going to use Navi in life?

    ReplyDelete
  30. What do you mean? I use it all the time. Do you mean what am I going to use it for that will get me ahead in life? Well, I'm learning a lot of practical linguists from it and I'm going to appear on Good Morning America because of it. Do you mean what life skills will I gain from it? Well, the advanced linguistics for sure as well as a hopefully lifelong passion for languages.

If you're saying that learning Na'vi isn't useful well how is making Barney's Mind useful, or playing video games, or watching sports or any other hobby truely useful?

    ReplyDelete
  31. hmm, good point. I was just saying taht if you had the skill to learn a language, then why not learn something that people in other countries speak so you can brag about how you are bilingual, and communicate with people from those countries. And making barneys mind is useful because sometimes I get bored waiting for new Freeman's Mind episodes. As for watching sports, its not useful, playing them are, but I never really got why any people would watch them. Playing video games is useful because in addition to them being fun, without video games, there is no half life, and with no half life, NO FREEMANS MIND!

    ReplyDelete
  32. And to be honest, I am not entireley sure why good morning america is asking learnnavi.org memebers to appear, they must reallly be dry of guests. I mean no offense, but I kind of expected Ross Scott to appear on TV before you...

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Anon: I know Latin. It's not like I can use that anywhere, but it taught me more about English than any of my English classes ever did.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, the reason they're asking us is because of the Oscar's, they're trying to drum up hype for them. I'm not complaining of course but that's their reasoning behind it. Also, I never expected to be on TV period, let alone before someone.

You are right though, it would be simultaneously useful and fun to learn something like French or Spanish or whatever and, now that I've discovered how much fun learning a language is to me, I totally plan to learn more languages after I finish with Na'vi.

  35. The Ross Scott comment was kind of a joke dude.
