Barney's Mind - Episode 4

Barney's Mind -Episode 4 on YouTube

So, episode 4 is up and I think I can finally say that I'm proud of this episode. There's nothing really special about it but I think it finally captures the way I envisioned Barney's Mind being.

On some other notes, it seems I'm holding a release schedule of about one episode a week. However, I must take a brief break so don't expect a new episode for at least another week or perhaps two. I need to catch up on a few things.

Also, there's a person trying a Shepherd's Mind and I like it a lot, give him support and maybe we'll get all three going! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNaJX6gOYMA

Lastly, some people have mentioned that I should have called it Calhoun's Mind and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately it's way too late to change it. Oh well, good observation there. Though, in the spirit of keeping this as original as possible I suppose this is best.

On some non-BM related stuff. This weekend I got to fly one of these:
A Cirrus SR22 G2 (or maybe it was a GTS) 4 seat turbo-charged 310 HP airplane with a max speed of 232 MPH and a state-of-the-art avionics package. Yeah, being a pilot is fun. (oh, and I got it all for free, thanks Cirrus!)

Episode 4 First Draft

Comment on it and I'll make changes, I think this came out really, really well.

House's Mind?

Hey, for those who like House M.D. and those who like Freeman's Mind or Barney's Mind then check out this house episode (if you haven't already). It's a guy who can't do anything but blink and they do most of the episode from his perspective and when I watched it I couldn't help be be reminded of Freeman's Mind a lot.

Episode 4 Footage

So, Episode 4 footage is up. I've created a new youtube channel to host the videos. The link to the footage is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TraNWm1L63M

So, the object here is to post any dialog you think would fit in this episode and also post any other things you think might improve the filming. I'll take these ideas and do the first take and the voice and then we'll take it from there.

Barney's Mind Collaboration

Hello people, Pirate here and I have something I want to announce. Before that though, I want to thank everyone for their support and I want to thank the people who have enjoyed the Barney’s Mind series. I’ve certainly enjoyed making it.

Now, this all started when I combined my extreme enjoyment of the spectacular series Freemans Mind with my impatience of his release schedule. I selfishly wanted more and finally decided to contact him and ask his permission to do a Barney’s Mind. He approved and away I went. What I created I can only describe as a hastily made piece of garbage with Ross Scotts amazing genius thrown on top. So, disheartened I decided to quit. However, my brother stepped in and persuaded me to embark on episode 2, which I did, wholeheartedly determined to quit after that. Then you people stepped in and gave me nothing but rave reviews and support and I just felt that I couldn’t end it there.

So, I started working on episode 3 and got a little side tracked, work plus video games plus other things. However, I had told people that I would have it done by Wednesday and so around 1 am on Thursday I had it posted. However, it is quite clear that what I posted was very rough and wasn’t reviewed properly.

So, I’ve come to the conclusion that it would not be fair to you guys or the series for me to continue in this manner. So, I am seeking to enlist all of you in helping me make Barney’s Mind. Yes, you heard right. Since I have thoroughly proven myself at being fairly unoriginal in my jokes, probably because I can’t help but have memorized Freemans mind from watching it 20,000 times, I would like... no I will need some help.

SO! My idea proceeds thusly, I will post on my blog http://barneysmind.blogspot.com/ a rough episode with my dialog put in. I then ask that everyone here who wishes to contribute to comment on these videos. I will make changes accordingly and will re-upload the video to the blog and we will do a second draft. Then, when I feel it is complete I will submit it to YouTube to my usual channel. In this way I feel we, as a group can provide a much better and enjoyable series that will stand as a worthy tribute to the Freeman’s Mind series.

Oh, and as an aside, since some people have mentioned that my voice is a little off for Barney, on which I must somewhat agree, I think if this works that we might experiment with a collaborative barney’s mind with all of you supplying a section of the voice and dialog. I don’t know, maybe not. But, the point is, there is so much potential out there on the internet and on YouTube so why not harness some off it and all of your ideas and see what we can create.

So, until then, see you out there.

Apparently I'm a horrible copycat.

So, machinima.com finally posted my videos and they've been up there for a day or so and people hate them. Apparently I'm a big copycat and should be shot. Wow, I mean I figured I would get a bad response but wow.

So, that's just weird, the posts on youtube had rave reviews combined with some good constructive criticism but the machinima comments we just plain mean.

Oh well, perhaps (weirdly enough) people on youtube are more paitient. Well, whatever, I'll probably post the third episode on machinima and then I'll stop if I continue to (somehow) offend them.

Not moving...

Okay, so I may not be moving as machinima.com seems to hate my video's or something. Having lots of problems with their site and after FINALLY getting the videos to upload they still have not been approved. Well, blah, I guess I'll be sticking to youtube.

Barney's Mind - Episode 2

Barney's Mind - Episode 2 (YouTube)

First off, the videos are moving to a new home, slightly.

I will now be uploading all my videos to www.machinima.com (and therefor their youtube channel). I have uploaded ep. 1 and ep. 2 to their site but will continue to keep ep1. and ep2. on my channel in the event that people have already embedded them into webpages or whatnot.

Now, I was honestly thiiiiiiis close to abandoning this after episode 2 but it seems that fate (youtube) had other plans for me because about the time that I made this decision I received a bunch of comments on how the video ruled, my voice was perfect (ugh, I hate my voice), and so on. In addition my brother made a few more comments and, end story, I have decided, for better or worse, to see this through to the end.

Other important news is a schedule. I will NOT be keeping a regular schedule. Somehow the more popular internet people seem to be able to regularly pump out humorous media with rigid regularity. I theorize that they have no life because of this (apologies to those who do). I however have a life and want to keep it. Thus, I will ATTEMPT to post at least once every 2 weeks IF NOT SOONER. I may even post one every week or so, BUT, I make no promises and there may come a time where I disappear for a few weeks. However, I think I can promise you that I will at least post once a month at a bare minimum.

So, that aside, lets talk about the video for a bit. Still refining my technique and it's coming along. Also, I'm finding that the old HL engine and my video card do not seem to play nice at all times resulting in glitches such as when a character model is in motion (tram, elevator) it jerks a bit. Also, this seems to be a bug with the game, when I go down in the elevator at the end I jump into the roof for a bit. Kinda hard to notice but still really annoying. No idea how to fix these, maybe I need to downgrade my video drivers (ugh).

Anyway, enjoy the video and please feel free to give me constructive advice (destructive advice will quickly be euthanized in an Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator).

Barney's Mind - Episode 1

Barney's Mind on YouTube

S'Ok, so this is going to be long and feel free to not read it. However, if you are as crazy as I am and/or regularly allow the internet to suck the life out of you like a digital vampire or something, then the following is a rant on how cool Ross Scott is and how lame I am yet how I still try my damnedest to succeed at everything (therefore really succeeding at nothing though I suppose being the ultimate 'jack-of-all-trades' would be pretty cool).

Anyway, so in my epic quest to become the ultimate 'jack-of-all-trades' I am finishing up my bit with automobiles and am now moving onto the realm of digital comedy. I didn't actually intend to try comedy or whatnot at all. Basically it all started when I stumbled (huh, if you lose the 's' off of stumbled then you get tumbled which almost works) across Freeman's Mind. The first episode was okay, and his Civil Protection stuff was okay, but about the time I hit the third episode I just couldn't stop laughing.

It was just so funny to me because I used to do that! When I would play through games I would think to myself all the time about things like "What purpose does this room have? Is this a box smashing room?" and so on. However this was back before youtube (YES! Such a time did exist scientists tell us) and I only had a crappy webcam and had no clue what fraps or demos or anything really was. However, I had halflife and it's ridiculous level design and I also had Kings Quest 9 and it's ridiculous dialog and between the two me and my brother had quite a few laughs misquoting lines and making fun of level design. Oh, and Jedi Knight 2, seriously, if I somehow get all the way through Barney's Mind I am TOTALLY doing Jedi Knight 2, that would be amazingly funny, heck, I wouldn't have to do anything really, the comedy would write itself.

Okay, so to sum up, I find that kind of humor really funny, making fun of things like poor level design and dialog and whatever, probably why zero punctuation (google it) is so funny to me. So, when I saw Freeman's Mind it was like someone had made my dream comedy and I was content, at least until I realized the next day that he doesn't post new ones except about ONCE A MONTH! BLARG, that's way too long to wait, hell, I chewed out BM-EP1 in about 3 days. So, I decided that just for shits and giggles I would make a Barney's Mind to kind of go along with FM. It wasn't supposed to be anything but for my personal enjoyment but as I thought about it I decided that I would try my hand at doing a series similar to FM only with a much faster posting rate (maybe once a week or something). So, I contacted Ross Scott, asked him if he was cool with it, he said ok and that he has no plans of doing anything beyond HL1 at this time, and I was off.

I completed the first episode within about a day and I hated it. To me the dialog was boring/annoying, the pace was off, the writing was unimaginative (as I was trying too hard to be Ross Scott), and it was generally not funny. So, I redid the dialog 3 times and finally said screw it. So I posted it figuring that it would suck just as much as I thought it would. Well, it did but it didn't. Most people seemed to think it's ok, but the mere fact that it's 'ok' just blows my mind. I just don't think my voice and personality work with this kind of humor.

So, I was going to abandon this after episode 1 but I decided that the tram ride just isn't funny and the real humor pie exists after the resonance cascade event and also that maybe I can get better cause if someone could like BM-EP1 then I'm sure people will like the later stuff.

So, as it is right now, I think I'm going to try a few more times, I'll probably go to a bit after the resonance cascade and then if I still am not happy or if I don't have people beating down my door with praise then I will hang up my short-lived comedy hat (maybe I'll try adding sharpshooting next to my jack-of-all-trades skillset...)
