OMG!!! MOVING!!! ARG!!!!!!

...right then, don't expect me to exist anywhere but inside the confines of a U-hawl moving van (how is this a van, it's clearly a truck!) for the next 2-3 days.

In other news, I'm thinking of buying a new car (or probably a slightly used one). Anyone have a good manual tranny, mid-high performance, kick-ass looking, fun to drive but good safety car that they can suggest?

Oh yeah...

...Barney's Mind - Episode 7 raw footage is out for dialog suggestions. Have at it.

Barney's Mind - Episode 6 (finally)

Barney's Mind - Episode 6 is out.

So, I left work early so that I could finish this for you guys. Oh, and yes I had the day off, I just went into work because I'm a good little slave. Those buildings won't design themselves you know.

Anyway, so after I finished this one I watched it a few times and I actually laughed at it. Now this may not seem like much but by the time I've finished an episode I've probably put about 6 hours of voice acting into it most of it involving some form of listening to myself talk. So, naturally any joke I make is so dead to me it not even close to funny. However, on this episode, each time I hear the line "did I just step on a Cheeto?" I laugh, which is awesome. So, if I can laugh at the same joke 20 times then I'm sure you guys will love this episode. Hoorah, I'm finally becoming good and this game.

In other news, moving next weekend, don't expect a Barney's Mind for at least 2 weeks.

YAR!

Sunday, May 24, 2009

Soooo, yeah.

Soooo, yeah. Barney's Mind is progressing, I've got a preliminary audio done but there are a LOT of parts I need to go back and improve so, to keep some semblance of quality, I probably wont have episode 6 out till some time this week. I would have been done by now but moving plus work plus some car repairs got in my way. Oh, and by no means is this delay caused by the 5 hours I put into Counter-Strike, L4D, and TF2 on saturday. No. Not at all. SHUT UP, I'M MAKING IT!... okay

In other news, Shephard's Mind - Episode 7 is out. Damn, he's really beating me now.

Delay

Grrrrr, so I installed teamspeak the other day for some of the online games I play with people and it seems to have screwed up my audio codecs so that now when I record the narration it comes out really crappy. Been struggling with this for over a day now and I can't seem to fix it. Really pissing me off. I've found the codecs that teamspeak installed and removed them but it still comes out crappy.

So, yeah, episode 6 will be delayed until I can fix this.

EDIT: Fix it (somehow) but it still may be delayed. We'll see.

Q...

...uick update. Just want to let people know that episode 6 is progressing but I couldn't manage to squeeze any work on it into yesterday. However, I will unexpectedly have part of saturday to work on it so it may come out saturday. I'm thinking though that monday evening when it will really come out though so don't get your hopes up.

Episode 6 progressing

Got the first bit of audio done for Episode 6 last night and I hope to get most, if not all of it done tonight. So, that leaves thursday for final edits and hopefully I will have this up friday evening. However, I'm gonna be out of town this weekend so if I don't finish it by friday then it might not be up until monday.

In the mean time have a LOLcat:

New Shephard's Mind episode.

Everybody's favorite masked crusader has a new episode out. No not batman you dork, Shephard.

Shephard's Mind - Episode 6 (damn, he's beating me)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, yeah, KrimsinYT, is totally going to finish long before I ever get around to the BM end and years before Ross Scott ever finishes Freeman's Mind.

However, I've decided to give you guys a little preview of cool stuff to come. There will be a point in Barney's Mind/Shephard's Mind where Barney and Shephard do in fact talk to each other and it will be coordinated in both episodes. Thus, you will in fact be getting a preview of Barney's Mind and a callback to Shephard's Mind.

Also, I'm hoping that the ending of Barney's Mind may also have him meeting up with Shephard at the end. Not telling how this would happen but, it will (though Half Life purists will probably hate me forever for it). Well, I suppose I can give out a little hint:
NO! NEVER! I'VE SAID TOO MUCH!

Review of the movie: Star Trek

So, I promised a review of Star Trek and here it is:

Note: I have tried my damned hardest NOT to include spoilers in here. However, I can't help but give away tiny, unimportant details. If you haven't seen the movie and want to have a totally virgin experience then you better shut off you computer right now (oh, and don't read any online review or anything as there are so many spoilers out there, I'm glad I didn't look at them until after the movie).

So, without further ado:

Star Trek (2009): This movie opens with a bang and keeps on banging you like some punk beating a freshman's head against a locker (but in a good way). In brief this movie can be summed up with the following words: "woah! BOOM! VROOM! HAH! HAH again! HAH even more! ZIP! BOOM! BOOM some more! WEEEEE! PUNCH! KICK! ZOOM! BOOM! HAH! WEEEEE! Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap"

In less brief review, the film could be described as the best parts of Star Wars combined with the best parts of Star Trek combined with some great acting combined with excellent special effects all rolled up in a nice package that leaves you wanting more (without being too brief or sacrificing anything).

So, as you have no doubt noticed I have nothing but praise for this movie. Well, I suppose not nothing as I will point out a few flaws near the end but they're minor and more just nitpicking (what a funny word, and the origin is equally funny).

Anyway, the movie opens with a plenty of fun and you are right away drawn into the action. Yet, despite being action packed it also starts with mystery. Then on top of that you immediately get drawn into the characters and the first 15 minutes of the movie do a great job of shaping the characters (read: Kirk). Then, as more characters get introduced they get fleshed out in brilliant ways that really shape their personality. It's actually quite remarkable how well they've transformed the original characters into these new actors. In fact, it almost seemed that these actors were the original actors at times. What I mean with that is the new actors fit so well with the movie that when they did something new it fit. At the same time though, when they did a call-back to The Original Series (TOS) then it fit as well. About the only thing that came out as forced was Chekhov's forced W's instead of V's but this was so forced that it actually became funny in itself (though, thankfully he quickly toned it down and became quite a bit more understandable, cause his first few lines we're kinda hard to follow).

Oh, and I'm sure I'm not alone with this but anybody who watched the trailers and saw Kirk picking up Uhura in a bar, seeing her get undressed, seeing Spock fighting Kirk on the bridge, etc. and thought "oh no, this is going to be James Bond as James T. Kirk" then you will be happily disappointed. No, scratch that, you will not only be happily disappointed but you may hopefully, like me, find these scenes to fit so well with the themes of the movie. Kirk in the bar is a great scene that really sets up Kirk's life before joining Star Fleet, Uhura getting naked is totally plausible and really funny, Spock hitting Kirk is a big part of one of the films themes, and so on.

Some other things worth mentioning are the action is awesome and fast but is perfectly spaced out with bits of dialog and non-action plot development. The music score is amazing, I'm thinking of buying if it's available. The special effects rival Star Wars - Episode 3 and look incredible (Enterprise coming out of Titan's atmosphere is incredible and the battles look wonderful).

Now, for the die-hard trekkies out there, don't worry. First off, this film has ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT ON STAR TREK CANNON. Now, I can't tell you how that is possible without giving away half the film but sufice it to say this is a clear reboot of the franchise while brilliantly maintaining the existing Star Trek universe (and even allowing for more shows/movies using the original Star Trek universe). Also, this while this movie is completely accessible by people who haven't seen Star Trek it will perhaps be enjoyed even more by the people who have seen Star Trek TOS (or even TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT). There are tons of call-backs to TOS, references to Spock on Romulus (TNG), and references to ENT (when you first see Scotty listen for the line about the Beagle and the transporter and catch the Admiral's name).

However, there are a few things that trekkies might not like. The big one being the enterprise's changes. First off, it's quite different on the outside but I think this looks good. About the only thing I didn't like was the nacelles, they looked a little off. But I still got used to this. Other things that kinda seemed off were the fact that everything seemed to have some kind a plasma propulsion engine at end of the nacelles which isn't really correct with Star Trek cannon but whatever. Also, the bridge is very different but it's all good in my mind. The only weird thing is the viewscreen isn't a screen but a window. WHY WOULD YOU PUT A WINDOW IN THERE! UGH, that was just stupid, nobody in their right mind would have such a tempting target as the command center of a starship have something as vulnerable as a window. I know, I know they have force fields and such but, still, as an engineer I call foul. Lastly, the engineering sections of the Enterprise looks like a pulp mill (something I'm quite familiar with) and while most people seemed to hate this, I loved it. I looked so much how I would picture a huge starship being in the bowels of it. I mean, when it comes right down to it this makes so much more sense then hiding everything away in conduits. When stuff needs regular fixing you leave everything open and exposed. The new Enterprise reflects this by showing 'steel' beams everywhere (but rivets? Engineering foul again, we haven't used riveted beams since the 30's-40's), pipes big and small, ducts, wires, etc. All this interspersed with futuristic control panels and what not. Though you never actually got to see the warp core (or cores, you'll see what I mean. Though, a thought just occurred to me, perhaps what they eject is not the core but rather the anti-matter containment and storage devices, that would make a lot more sense).

MINOR SPOILER AHEAD:

So, yeah, all good there in my mind. So, now for the few flaws. First off, the only gaping plot hole I found was at the end history has been altered but why then did they not go back and change history back? I guess they figured it might make things worse blah, blah, blah, but that never seemed to stop Star Trek before? Oh well.

END SPOILER ALERT:

Then there was the bit with the Enterprise being built in Iowa and I gotta call Star Trek foul, it was built in San Fransisco. That's stretching it though, aside from the above (and some physics fouls but that can be passed off) there were no major flaws. Heck, they even did somethings that only Firefly and a handful of other movies/shows have done, they had space be quiet. Well, not all the time, they did it only when it was really artistic but I thought this was a good trade off. It allowed them to have huge space explosions and such while still showing that if you perform an orbital jump all you're going to hear is your breathing.

So, anyway, I think I've said enough. I could go on for about 10 more paragraphs but anymore would just be silly. The final bit I can say is watch it then watch it again then take your girlfriend to watch it (quite girl friendly, not just a guy movie) then take your kids to watch it (I'd say as long as they are 10 years old it's appropriate but there are some scary monsters and some women in bras and lots of screaming and fighting and a woman giving birth and so on but I think it's all good) and then watch it one last time before it leaves the theater.

Movie of the year, all the way.

Shephard's Mind - Episode 4

Shephard's Mind - Episode 4 is up, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIA4eAjU9uk&feature=channel and this is my favorite. Me and my brother we're laugh our asses off at it.

In other news, just got back from the Star Trek movie and, if I may be so bold, movie of the year, by far! Watch it ASAP. I'll post a review of it later.

Oh, and something I'm sure you don't care about but I'll put it here anyway. Barney's Mind - Episode 5 is in the works, might even have it monday evening. But, like I said, I'm sure you don't care.

Raw footage is up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emxd1olytLc
Comment and such.

Episode 4 - Special Edition

Well, finally getting back to Barney's Mind. As promised I re-did the audio for Episode 4 and it got uploaded this morning. You can find it here: Barney's Mind - Episode 4

Nothing much else to report.

Oh, I got something, I just had a fortune cookie and this was the fortune: "If you do not run your subconscious mind yourself, someone else will." Now, I got an idea of what it means but what's your take on it?

Shephard's Mind - Episode 3

So, Shephard's Mind - Episode 3 is out and it's very good, watch it and stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB_ivgremho

Oh, in other news, NEVER try to make microwave mac and cheese using mac and cheese designed for stoves only. I tried to fudge it using the directions for the stove and the results we're less than satisfactory. I couldn't even really call it mac and cheese anymore, it was more like yellow mush soup. I tried to eat it but it was like watery cheese paste, ugh, so nasty. So, I guess I'm gonna live off of the two other things I brought to work for lunch today, Little Debbie coffee cake and tostitos and salsa. I suppose if I'm really hungry and can get off my lazy butt and walk/drive to the store down the road but it's raining and, frankly, the cheese paste has kinda ruined my appetite.

Shit, I hope that wont make me sick or anything.

P.S. Watching Shephard's Mind has got me completely determined to do SOMETHING BM related tonight. So, yes, something shall be posted, or many somethings will, we'll see.

Hello...

"Hello,
I'm waiting here for you,
everlong..."

Heh, sorry, was listening to Everlong by the Foo Fighters, which has only increased the annoyance that I left my Guitar Hero disk at a friends house. Grrr, I want my stuff back.

Anyway, so I've once again had too much to do and didn't get any BM work done. Grrrr. However, I have made vast progress in finding a new apartment. Got one place that looks SPECTACULAR. Also, it's about the same size as the one I'm in right now but it's $150 less a month AND the electricity is about $65 less than what I pay right now. On top of that I have about 3 other places that look pretty good as well. Some are little less nice but are even cheaper. So, I guess I have to decide how much I want to pay which is a good position to be in.

So, this is awesome, new place, more monies, yay. I'm so tired of living on a shoe-string budget, I wish my roommates hadn't bailed on my a month after I got the place I'm living in right now. I can't wait to have money to go flying and golfing and all those good things. Maybe I'll post a video of my flying on YouTube when I get back from some flying.

Ummm, let's see, other news. Mmm, I guess not much is happening, at least nothing much worth writing here. Well, I guess I can give a BM update of sorts:

So, it's clear to me that until I move I'm gonna have some difficulty keeping a regular BM schedule but don't worry. I hope to get the fixes for Ep4 done tonight (the ones I talked about last post) and then I may even have the raw footage for Ep5 done tonight but lets say tomorrow. So, I'm thinking then that I should have the preliminary audio done by sunday and lets say about 2-3 days of editing and junk just to be safe so we're looking at sometime mid the late next week for a release date. Also, friday of next week I should have my hours for the Counter-Strike server all done and then I can relax a little more and hopefully resume a more normal BM schedule.

Oh, and if people every want to play some Counter-Strike or L4D with me my steam ID is:
2962112, oh and if you want to play some Guitar Hero or Smash Brothers: Brawl just message me here and I'll send that info to ya.

"
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again ."

Silly Cars

Blarg (I love that word), didn't get to sleep till late last night, was too busy trying to catch up with house chores. Also, my girlfriends car needed some work so I spent about 4 hours taking tires on and off and bleeding brake lines.

Concordantly, I'm now behind in my three other things, one being getting enough hours on this counter strike: source server I play on so I can join their group. Not sure why this is so important to me, I mean, there's no real benifit to joining the group other than a dedicated slot on their server, access to their teamspeak server, and a few other goodies (though they do have a clan sleepover/LAN party once a year but it's a good 3 states away so I'd probably never go).

The other two things are looking for a new apartment (lease runs out at the end of this month and I'm looking for a cheaper place) and making BM ep5.

However, I think I've decided to take a day, perhaps tonight if I get around to it, to redo some of the voice on BM ep4. First off, the sound leveling got screwed up so I'm gonna increase a lot of the voice volume to match the other 3 episodes. I also noticed that some sound clips clash with others, meaning it's really obvious that the clips were not recorded in one take. Lastly, I think I've identified one of the things that really makes Freeman's Mind funny and that is the feeling that Ross Scott puts into his voice acting. I've tried but I guess I've not tried hard enough because I can hear gaping differances between his episodes and mine. So, I would really like to redo some of it, no dialog changes though, just improvements.

Anyway, nothing really else exciting happening, I'll update when I have more news.

P.S. I've had about 100 people ask me how to hide models in Half Life and I can never remember the command. So, when I get onto EP5 I'll make sure and write the command down, ok?

Blog stuff

So, I'm thinking I'm gonna turn this into a semi-regular blog not only about Barney's Mind but about other stuff that catches my attention and I wish to share with you people.

So, to start things out I'm gonna give you a brief bit of info about me.

My name is Ian Riley and I am 23 and I live in central Maine. I rent a medium-sized apartment and share it with my three cats and occasionally my girl-friend (she recently moved out for a job a little ways away but it's all good, we needed some time apart).

I recently graduated from the University of Maine in Orono and I'm currently employed at a small company in Lincoln, Maine called Foresight Engineering (www.fepc.us) where I am a Civil/Structural Engineer and the IT professional. This is my office:

And this is my office:
And this is also my office:

As you can see I do a lot of work for the paper mills around here. But I also do residential and commercial design as well as 3D drafting. It's an amazing job because every day is something completely unique and exciting. Like for example, just last week I was working on a column that rusted and buckled in a pulp mill:

and this week I'm working on the structural system of a senior housing complex in town (designing the foundation as we speak).

So, that's my job and I love it. Other things I do are play excessive amounts of video games (Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, and Smash Brothers are some of my favorites), read books (I like fantasy books such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, currently reading Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series), watch movies (don't care for TV that much but I like House and Heroes and discovery channel stuff such as MythBusters, recently been watching a lot of old Star Trek episodes too), I enjoy cars and love to work on them, also I am a private pilot and go flying on a semi-regular basis.

So, that's me in a nutshell. I'll post here again tomorrow but I'm thinking this will be a three times a week journal, maybe less, maybe more.

P.S. Hoping to get the footage of episode 5 up tonight. Estimated release date is sometime end of this week or start of the next.

Shephards Mind - Epsiode 2

So, for those who may have noticed, KrimsinYT has finished Shephard's Mind - Episode 2. It's awesome and watch it, DO IT NOW!! DOOOOOO ITTT!! ARE YOU DOING IT! STOP READING THIS AND DO IT!! :P
